The Malaysian Dental Association participated in the 44th Asia Pacific Dental Congress ( APDC) 2023 & 12th Hong Kong International Dental Expo and Symposium ( HKIDEAS) from 9th to 11th June 2023. The Malaysian Dental Association (MDA) delegates were led by Dr Lim Chiew Wooi and Associate Professor Dr Mas Suryalis Binti Ahmad. With its theme “ Achieving Excellence in Dentistry” , the APDF was back to a face-to-face meeting, after the hiatus of three years due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Beside giving participants a platform to listen to, meet and learn from the leading experts in various dental fields, APDF also provided participants an opportunity to explore and experience the latest technology and dental gadgets displayed by the dental traders at the trade exhibition.
As a member dental association of the Asia Pacific Dental Federation ( APDF) which comprises the National Dental Associations (NDAs)from the Asia Pacific region, MDA has been actively participating in events organized by APDF which also serves as the Asia Pacific Regional Organization (APRO of FDI). The delegates meeting is one of the most important agenda at the APDC because policies and statements that promote good oral health, dental education and advancements are suggested , discussed and decided at the delegates meeting. Dr Lim Chiew Wooi (chief delegate), A/P Dr Mas Suryalis (delegate) and Dr Chow Kai Foo (alternate delegate) and Dr Jonathan Lin (alternate delegate) attended and participated in this important delegates meeting.
Alongside the meetings of APDF and scientific programme and workshop, a National Dental Associations Forum ( NDAF)was held on the 10th June 2023 to share the dental policies, situations of any manpower shortage or excess and their solutions. NDAs were invited to share their insights on those areas with a view to addressing challenges in the dental manpower planning and oral healthcare development in the Asia Pacific Region. Dr Lim Chiew Wooi and Dr Chow Kai Foo attended this forum. Dr Lim was one of the speakers of the forum. Malaysian delegates Dr Tan Sock Hooi and Dr Ang Lai Choon were also at the forum to support this event.
The MDA delegates together with the delegates of all participating nations were also invited by the host Hong Kong Dental Association( HKDA) to attend sumptuous formal and informal dinners where Hong Kong is famous for its Chinese and International cuisines. These were the good occasions for Malaysian delegates to mingle with other National Associations delegates and speakers and strengthen the networking.
A dental event such as APDC would bring closer the cooperation and networking among the NDAs. MDA has been actively participating in the APDC and other dental events, sharing experiences with other NDAs to promote the art and science of dentistry for the benefit of the public.
