PROF. DR. PHRABHAKARAN NAMBIAR
Prof. Dr Phrabhakaran Nambiar embarked on a dentistry career inspired by a transformative experience at Dr. Khoo’s renowned dental clinic. After completing his undergraduate studies in Manipal, he honed his skills in Sarawak for two years. Driven by a passion for Forensic Dentistry, he corresponded with Prof Gunnar Johanson, leading to a Ph.D. pursuit at Karolinska Institutet. Returning to Malaysia after private practice, he contributed to academia at the University of Malaya, later earning scholarships for Dental Radiology and Maxillofacial Radiology studies in South Africa. Today, Prof. Dr. Phrabhakaran Nambiar excels with dual specialties: forensic dentistry and maxillofacial radiology and was among the first in country to specialize in both fields of study and has led the country in identifying high profile cases.
PROF. DR. NGEOW WEI CHEONG
Professor Dr. Ngeow Wei Cheong, a current lecturer at the University of Malaya’s Faculty of Dentistry, boasts an impressive career. After graduating in 1992, he worked briefly as a private practitioner before joining the University of Malaya as a tutor. His international stint in England led to a Fellowship in Dental Surgery. Returning to Malaysia, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and later became a lecturer at the University of Malaya in 2000. Prof. Dr. Ngeow holds a Master’s in Dental Science in Oral Surgery and a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield, with over 160 published papers, emphasizing craniofacial anthropometry and nerve regeneration. Currently, he serves as an Honorary Supervisor for the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
PROF. DR. TOH CHOOI GAIT
Professor Toh Chooi Gait, the founding Dean of Dentistry at the International Medical University (IMU) in Kuala Lumpur, also holds the position of Pro-Vice Chancellor (Development) from January 2016. Previously, she served as a professor at the University of Malaya, where she held roles such as Deputy Dean and Head of the Department of Conservative Dentistry. With a strong editorial presence, she contributes to journals like Operative Dentistry and the European Journal for Dental Education. Actively engaged in governmental committees, Prof. Toh chairs the Protem Examination Committee for the Malaysian Dental Council and is involved in various key roles within the dental community. Prof. Toh Chooi Gait was the recipient of the Faculty Of Dental Surgery International Medal 2022 by the Royal College Of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
DR. JEANETTE CHUA
Dr. Jeanette Chua Keng Ling, a University of Melbourne graduate, practiced dentistry in Singapore before earning a master’s in applied commerce. She furthered her expertise with a preceptorship in Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University. Specializing in advanced periodontology, she founded Encia Dental Specialist in 2008 in Kuala Lumpur. As Founder of Artius Group, she prioritizes ethical dentistry. Dr. Jeanette actively lectures on esthetic implant dentistry. A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, she serves as an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr Jeanette Chua leads the continuous education in Ancora Imparo Dental Training Centre.
PROF. DATO’ DR. MOHAMED IBRAHIM ABU HASSAN
Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abu Hassan completed his foundation studies and earned a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from UM in 1980. After serving in Terengganu, he joined UM as a tutor in 1985. Following his master’s in the UK, He returned to UM as a lecturer until 1995. Pursuing a PhD at the University of Bristol, Prof. Dr. Mohamed later became Deputy Dean Academic at UM. In 2006, where he played a crucial role in establishing UiTM’s dental school, nominated by UM’s dean. As the founding dean, he has overseen the growth and development of UiTM’s dental school since its inception. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim is also the key person in developing numerous dental education programs and regulations of the dental industry in Malaysia. He is also recognized as the World’s top 2% scientist in 2023 by Stanford University.
DR. FIRDAUS HANAPIAH
Dr. Firdaus Hanapiah, a 1990 graduate from the University of Otago, New Zealand, embarked on a dynamic career. He began as a clinical tutor at the University of Malaya before joining the Eastman Dental Hospital, University College London, earning an MSc in Oral Surgery and a Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons, England, in 1996. Returning to Malaysia, he became a lecturer at the University of Malaya. Awarded the Fellowship of the International Congress of Implantologist, Dr. Firdaus is a pioneering figure in virtual surgery for dental implants, having placed over 1000 implants. He actively lectures and participates in global dental conferences. He is a passionate Oral Surgeon who handled numerous reconstructive facial surgeries and spearhead the continuous education in Benchmark Education Group and Denta Drone, a digital dental solution provider.
PROF. DR. ROSNAH BINTI MOHD ZAIN
With over 30 years as an academician, Prof. Dr. Rosnah led the University of Malaya’s dental faculty, serving as Head of Department, Deputy Dean, and Dean. Her impactful research, including a pioneering oral mucosal lesions study, garnered recognition. Notably, she developed the DentalDetect training program for global oral mucosal lesion data standardization. Prof. Dr. Rosnah’s role in the Malaysian Oral Cancer Database and Tumour Bank System marked a shift toward collaborative, team-based research. Recognized as a ‘Top Research Scientist’ in 2014 and ‘Distinguished Fellow for Asia’ in 2016, World’s top 2% scientist in 2023 by Stanford Universities, Prof. Dr. Rosnah continues her influential work as Founding Director and Advisor at the Oral Cancer Research and Coordinating Centre at the University of Malaya. Currently Prof. Dr. Rosnah is a Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research, Innovation, Enterprise (RIE) of MAHSA University.
